You may be tempted to make some sort of judgment about my workout area pictured above. Brook and I recently combined households; the house looks great…the garage is as pictured. My office became a bedroom for my daughter, and the room she vacated became my soon-to-be-stepdaughter’s room. The garage became the “staging area”. It currently looks like a staging area for that show Hoarders. Somewhere in the midst of this ode to Sanford and Son is my treadmill…which leads me to the subject of planning.

So far, I’ve been staying true to the commitments I made on day one (with the exception of not hitting my water consumption goals consistently… working on that), but I need to make a plan for the inevitable winter weather. It’s January in Montana. Things have been mild so far, but I know what’s coming. Here are my options to continue my daily walk once the snow arrives:

  • Buy appropriate gear and tough it out
  • Find an indoor walking area
  • Join a gym
  • Assemble the treadmill in the garage (no room for it in the house after recently combining families)

The first option may not actually be an option in my neighborhood. We have no sidewalks or street lights, so even if your protected from the elements, you’re not protected from vehicles on slick roads. I would likely need to find a local trail if I intend to walk outside.

I’m not a fan of the second option because it means either walking around a retail store, or taking a 30 minute drive to the mall (where I guess I’d join my fellow mall walkers, Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and Sophia). 😩

A gym membership may be in my future, but not yet. I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow to find out why my right shoulder no longer works. Surgery seems likely, but I’m hoping for PT. Until I find out what’s in store for me, I think I’ll hold off on any contractual obligations. 1

The treadmill in the garage seems to be the best option, but it will obviously take a bit of work. (poor Brook 😔 )

It’s important that I make a decision and be prepared, because if I don’t … I can foresee a day where I’ll say, “Wow…It’s bad outside. Guess I’ll skip the walk today.” After that, failure will be imminent.

If you’re trying to follow a routine to improve yourself in some way, you have to plan ahead. No plan, no success.

I committed to 2 miles a day this week, but mismanaged my time today and only had time for a mile and a half.2 I’ll make it up!

  1. This shoulder issue is limiting my exercise quite a bit. I purchased the finest piece of fitness equipment money can buy (at a yard sale…in a trailer park),The Total Gym. It’s unusable in my current state. Once I have an answer to what the problem is, I’ll work in some upper body strength building exercises into my routine. ↩︎

  2. The lie I’m apologizing for. ↩︎
